PHOWN repeats
Repeat counts of weaver colonies are valuable in showing seasonal and annual changes in colony sizes of weavers. Choose a weaver colony near to your home or work that you can monitor on a regular basis. The suggested interval for repeats is weekly, but you can submit repeats on a daily, monthly or random basis (although regular is best). If you submit repeats regularly but skip some because you are on holiday, for instance, that does not matter - simply continue when you can. You can also send repeats once a year, eg if you go on holiday to the same place every year and there are weaver colonies. Here is a graph of colony size changes in a Cape Weaver colony (phown 70) with 2 resident males, showing a similar pattern in 2 years - other colonies may have very different patterns.
You can save a locality in your gazetteer to make it easier and quicker to upload future repeats - see here.
To take part, just start submitting records with nest counts regularly for your favourite weaver colony. If you want to register your colony, send me an email and I'll add your colony to the list below. You can still send regular repeats without the colony being registered.
If you have not participated in PHOWN before, and would like to start, read how to take part here.
Registered repeats
Below is a list of colonies that observers plan to send repeat PHOWN records for the rest of 2012. To see a colony, click on a map marker, or thumb-nail, or phown number in the list below. Any PHOWN record of a particular colony will show the details (photos, date, etc) for that record as well as a full listing of counts by date at the bottom of that webpage.Click on a thumb-nail to see the full record
