These are either Village or Southern Masked Weavers, not Lesser. No birds seen for ID. Spent over an hour in hide. Other photographer showed me pics of a Village in reedbeds next to hide - taken earlier that day. nests look like Southern Masked - shape, position in tree and out-of season building more indicative of SMW in this area. 2. 4 different species nesting, maybe 5.
Village, Lesser & Southern Masked, Holub's Golden & maybe Thick-bill. (thick-bill pic taken this morning by another photographer shown to me)
3. mixed colony, village & lesser intermingled.
4. Holub's Golden nests seen/ID and female photographed.
5. No specific Southern Masked Weaver nest ID or linked - but males chasing other species females. 8710 797 1/2/2014 0 VM 7476, 7477, 7478 revisited. Lesser masked, Village, golden. Weaver & heron colonies across dam from Panic dam hide. Visited mid afternoon at 16H22. No weavers or herons seen in
trees. Much fewer nests seen and most seem old or disused. (old means
earlier this season) One Lesser MW double decker noted, the lower nest looks new. Believe that the weavers have bred and left. Season over.
