800, Eastern Golden Weaver Ploceus subaureus (see species summary here)Record status ACCEPTED Vm 7326 [on-line data upload (2013-10-24): 53507] Species P. subaureus? Observer(s) Jubber W Country, town, locus Tanzania, , Dar es Salaam,
0737DBLocality Lake Tagalala, Selous GR Latitude, longitude -7.71, 37.999 [2000 m accuracy] Date 2013/10/21 Notes No females, they don't sit still and taking photos from a boat with guests, is quite tricky, however I have images of the following males and nests. Not nesting in Phragmites, tend to select more shrubs and bushes overhanging the water, more spread out, seems males are highly territorial and prefer their own little bush or shrub. Most of the images they have nested in Vernonia sp. possibly Pluchea dioscoridis. The branches suite the nesting better. Seen them also in the Combretum constrictum.
Not in densities as I have seen P. subaureus or the masked specimens, don't seem as colonial, besides male and his females.
The eye colouration is interesting as it is a rich red colour, but the orange-brown wash extends onto the head and down the throat. Almost a mix between Southern brown throated (but with a red eye), subaureus's red eye and then a bit of Golden Palm weaver thrown into the mix. Does the structure of this look right for P. subaureus? I'm use to the nest looking more bell shape, whereas this looks more like a turned bowl.
