803, Southern Masked Weaver Ploceus velatus (see species summary here)Record status ACCEPTED Vm 6235 [on-line data upload (2013-07-15): 45592] Species Southern Masked Weaver Observer(s) Zaloumis, Alex Country, town, locus South Africa, Gauteng, Randburg,
2628AALocality 1 Jan Smuts, River View Latitude, longitude -26.111461111111, 28.019980555556 [0 m accuracy] Date 2013/7/1 Notes Mostly new nests, in gardens of River View flats alongside Braamfontein spruit. Colony not noticed during earlier visits probably due to dense garden trees. Many birds in area, some attending nests.
About 20m away from Vm 6164 and 40m from Vm 6161. Is a definitely separate cluster of nests. My observation is that the SMW in central Jhb. is breeding early.
Very few if any old nests survived.
These are all new/green I presume dense tree cover, evergreen palm fronds, readily available water
and (dog) food allows these birds to extend their breeding season in
gardens. Nest count 25 Nest site tree
