History of repeat colony counts
Note: repeats from the same day are not shown.vm Species code Date Nests Notes 837 803 13/6/2011 1 Nest half built, still open at back. Nest first observed on previous day, 12 June. This site had eight nests last year (which were not submitted to PHOWN) 838 803 14/6/2011 1 Nest now nearly complete. Nest is above the canal on Bougainvillea shrub, built at end of long shoot sticking out over canal. The third picture shows the bird thinning the leaves on other branches. 854 803 26/6/2011 2 This is the same colony as PHOWN 837 and PHOWN 838. There are now two nests. 855 803 10/7/2011 3 This is the same colony has PHOWN 837 and 838. There are now three nests. 888 803 11/7/2011 3 No birds in attendance; 1 newly constructed nest 931 803 24/7/2011 3 PHOWN 837, 838, 854, 855 are the same colony. It still has three nests 941 803 30/7/2011 4 this is the same nest as phown 837, 838, 854, 855, 931 and now has four nests (the 4th is under construction, on the left of the picture) 1035 803 12/8/2011 2 Only two nests remain. The nest built first and third have been destroyed. The last remains of these nests can be seen in the second and third photos 1061 803 16/8/2011 3 This is a fifth nest being built, the first and third were destroyed, a this nest is being build at the site of the third nest! (837, 838, 854, etc) 1215 803 10/9/2011 3 No weavers seen but very brief visit 1807 803 8/1/2012 4 4 nests (2 + 1 + 1) in bushes high above canal 1853 803 22/1/2012 4 1995 803 23/2/2012 4 Still 4 nests left although breeding has stopped 16782 803 25/3/2012 4 16783 803 29/7/2012 3 breeding nest [early] 4697 803 13/12/2012 8 This colony has had a varying number of nests since it started in June --- it is still active 5550 803 27/4/2013 1 This new nest is built in among the decomposing nests of the 2012 breeding season. It is the first nest to be built in this colony this year: early on 27 April 5827 803 22/6/2013 3 Three nests. From lower "brown" one I saw a female emerge and return a few minutes later. She is probably incubating. Since last year, the vegetation overhanging the river has been dramatically trimmed 5916 803 29/6/2013 3 Last photographed 22 June 2013, a week ago. Still three nests. See
http://vmus.adu.org.za/?vm=PHOWN-5827 6157 803 7/7/2013 4 The fourth nest had not been started four days ago, ie on 3 July, when last I checked the colony. Previous formal record is at http://vmus.adu.org.za/?vm=PHOWN-5916 6223 803 13/7/2013 2 This colony had four nests six days earlier, on 7 July, three on one branch and a nest under construction. See http://vmus.adu.org.za/?vm=PHOWN-6157 --- the three older nests had been broken down by 10 July, leaving only the single new nest. A new nest is under construction at the end of the branch which had the three nests. 6449 803 20/7/2013 2 The older of the two nests at the last visit has been demolished and a new nest is being built in its place. (for previous visit see http://vmus.adu.org.za/?vm=PHOWN-6223 ) 6533 803 27/7/2013 3 6825 803 3/8/2013 3 The oldest nest is just starting to be demolished. The time is 10h30. 6827 803 4/8/2013 3 10h00 on 4 August, nest is now well under way 6960 803 9/8/2013 3 Last week there was an old nest in the position of the leftmost nest in the photo. This was torn down earlier in the week, and on Wednesday this new nest was under construction. 6987 803 17/8/2013 4 There is a fourth nest. The male was performing at this nest, which had a female in it for most of the time I watched 7021 803 21/8/2013 4 7022 803 25/8/2013 4 The green nest is new, and it looks like it went wrong. The female is bringing leaves to the nest; lining?? 7073 803 7/9/2013 4 1 male, building new nest (cell phone photos) 7109 803 10/9/2013 4 7260 803 29/9/2013 3 The nest that has been destroyed was intact two days previously 7261 803 12/10/2013 5 For the first time this breeding season, there are five nests in this colony. Females were seen coming and going today. 7273 803 16/10/2013 5 The left hand branch has a third nest near the tip. This is the first time (I think) that this nest position has been used this year. The green just below the nest are the leaves of the branch, which have not been removed. 7325 803 23/10/2013 6 Top two nests on right hand side of photos both getting attention during a 5-minute visit 7344 803 29/10/2013 5 There are now 3 intact nests, 1 nest being deconstructed, and one new nest under construction 7381 803 2/11/2013 2 There were three nests on the 29th, one nearly broken up nest, and one under construction. Two of the three nests have been dismantled, and the partly built nest of the 29th appears to have been broken down and started again; when I checked on 1 November (ie yesterday) there was no nest on the end of the lower left branch 7387 803 4/11/2013 2 The nest that was under construction near the end of the left branch is not the same nest that was being built in this position two days ago, on 2/11. I observed that nest being demolished yesterday. This is a new nest a few cm up from the end of the branch 7405 803 9/11/2013 2 The left hand branch is now completely devoid of nests, apart from a few strands. The right hand branch has a nest under construction 7414 803 12/11/2013 1 Yet another nest is under construction. The old nest has been there for a while, the new nest is new since the records posted three days ago (09/11/2013) 7448 803 17/11/2013 1 Only one nest left in the colony now 7485 803 23/11/2013 2 A new nest has been constructed, this time at the end of the left hand branch! 7527 803 26/11/2013 1 The new nest that was on the end of the left branch three days ago has disappeared. 7596 803 3/12/2013 0 Probably the last photo for the breeding season for this colony. The left branch has no nests, and the last nest on the right branch has a hole through it. 7607 803 8/12/2013 1 Just as it seemed that breeding had ceased for the year, there is a new nest built on the left hand brach 7652 803 11/12/2013 2 The nest with the hole made by the predator on the right hand branch has been destroyed (photo 3), and a second nest has been built in the past three days at the end of the left hand branch (photo 2) 7657 803 13/12/2013 2 Still two nests 7718 803 17/12/2013 3 This little colony is back up to three nests!! 7823 803 21/12/2013 2 One nest broken down since last visit, the one at the tip of the right branch 8066 803 28/12/2013 4 Now back up to four nests! 8099 803 7/1/2014 4 The bottom left nest of the 28 December 2013 photo is gone, and has been replaced by a nest slightly higher up the same branch 8240 803 9/1/2014 4 Still four nests 8429 803 16/1/2014 0 Breeding is over for the year. In the past few days this "hedge" has been trimmed, and the two branches that were used by this weaver were trimmed. And so breeding, which started in April at this site, comes to an end for this season. 8450 803 20/1/2014 0 Labourers from Woodside Village trimmed the "hedge" on the boundary with the river. The removed the two branches which the Southern Masked Weaver had used this breeding season. The branches were stacked on the roadside. The adjacent neighbours saw the two branches with two nests each in the pile. They removed them from the pile and draped them on a tree, as shown. In the process, at least one egg fell out, so the nest were in active use. The weavers did not return to the nests. 12195 803 24/8/2014 1 First nest of the season, back at the site that has been used for the past three years 12347 803 31/8/2014 1 Same nest as on 24 August 2014; no changes 13627 803 5/10/2014 2 This was a thriving colony last year. This year this spot has had only a single nest, with a second nest, intermittently, about 30m downstread 14544 803 30/12/2014 3 3 nests, 1 a bit further away; female fed large chicks in nest 14581 803 9/1/2015 2 male in vicinity but nests old 18761 803 31/1/2016 5 chicks heard; colony moved closer again, male heard 18776 803 7/2/2016 5 old nests, SMW heard nearby 18927 803 21/2/2016 5 old 18930 803 28/2/2016 5 SMW and sparrow perched near nests 19007 803 13/3/2016 5 no roosting birds in colony at night, photo 2 taken in morning 19089 803 10/4/2016 5 old nests, no roosting birds 19274 803 8/5/2016 3 little more water in canal 19510 803 22/5/2016 2 old nests 19632 803 29/5/2016 2 old nests 20169 803 5/6/2016 2 old nests, no roosting birds 21993 803 26/6/2016 0 night check - nests all gone 22087 803 10/7/2016 0 still no nests 22546 803 17/7/2016 1 new green nest 23395 803 30/7/2016 1 23405 803 31/7/2016 0 nest gone 24009 803 7/8/2016 0 no nests 24031 803 14/8/2016 1 male building new nest 24128 803 24/8/2016 3 photo with cell phone; male near nests (2 nests circled, 3rd nest close but unclear); [another male displayed at twigs Keert Mid] 24185 803 4/9/2016 2 male display; third nest looks like Cape Weaver nest 24222 803 11/9/2016 0 3+ nests, green nest, chicks heard - think from here 24318 803 25/9/2016 3 3+ nests, also nests scattered closer - possibly built by immatures 24343 799 28/9/2016 3 2 nests CW, 1 nest may be SMW 24374 799 2/10/2016 4 also SMW? 24406 14214 9/10/2016 3 seems 1 SMW nest, 2 CW nests 24551 14214 30/10/2016 1 24705 803 13/11/2016 2 24749 803 27/11/2016 2 male heard, female out nest 24782 803 6/12/2016 3 24823 803 16/12/2016 4 male seen, also other male SMWs passing by 24850 803 25/12/2016 3 juvenile flew out breed nest and landed in nearby bushes, 10.08am, heard male 24928 803 12/1/2017 2 NBN (non breeding nests) 24988 803 28/1/2017 2 green nest 25049 803 12/2/2017 1 25192 803 26/3/2017 1 old 25923 803 23/4/2017 1 1 nest from far 26180 803 30/4/2017 1 greenish nest, from far 26223 803 28/5/2017 1 old NBN 26335 803 8/7/2017 0 7 nests from far photo, may include nests from col 1B 26375 803 23/7/2017 3 1 old (L), 2 newer NBN (1 green), male displayed 26413 803 6/8/2017 4 male display, female inside green nest to investigate (photo 1), NBN, broken nest, far old (think brN) nest 26476 803 3/9/2017 4 also CW nest 26504 799 16/9/2017 2 2 green N with SMW nests 26593 803 8/10/2017 0 2+N from far 26711 803 29/10/2017 0 5+ nests 26718 803 12/11/2017 0 5+2 far N mw+cw [mw 2N, grN] 27360 803 13/5/2018 3 3 new nests, moulting/partial male building 27401 803 3/6/2018 5 3 new nests and ring; bit further 1 new+1 old nest 27613 803 22/7/2018 6 c6N, grN 27737 803 9/9/2018 12 10+2N; female out breeding nest 27745 803 16/9/2018 13 11+2N, female out nest 27791 803 6/10/2018 11 2+7+2N, female out; chick in nest 27864 803 14/10/2018 10 c10N, female out, green nest 27901 803 28/10/2018 10 9+1N, male at far nest, female 27933 803 11/11/2018 12 old, green, breeding nests 28110 803 8/12/2018 0 8+N, male 28136 803 23/12/2018 12 brN, old brN 28225 803 20/1/2019 11 10+1N, breed nest, male 28350 803 30/3/2019 9 old, 8+1 far nest, old brN 28390 803 24/4/2019 6 4+1 far old, 1 greenish nest 28465 803 12/5/2019 9 green nest, greenish nest, rest old [1N far included] 28535 803 28/6/2019 6 from far, female left nest & chicks heard 29142 803 9/11/2019 10 10N in photo 29173 803 22/11/2019 8 male breaking nest; 8N in photo 29238 803 22/12/2019 5 5N in photo 30264 803 17/10/2021 7 male, 2 females, male stripped leaves near colony; colony to right of small CW colony 30740 803 8/5/2022 3 male partial br dress near, 1 newish nest 30907 803 24/9/2022 2 grN, male near
