792, Lesser Masked Weaver Ploceus intermedius (see species summary here)Record status ACCEPTED Vm 17543 [manual upload (2015-08-31): 162457] Species Lesser Masked Weaver Observer(s) Botha, AJ Country, town, locus South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, Bayala,
Locality Baobab Inn, near Thanda Private GR Latitude, longitude -27.796202, 32.139118 [0 m accuracy] Date 2013/11/22 Notes While sitting on the verandah yesterday afternoon, we were entertained by the antics of three Diederik Cuckoo's attempting to outfox the Lesser Masked Weavers nesting in a palm overhanging the pool to lay their eggs. This female thought she found an opportunity when she tried to enter a seemingly unguarded nest that she could access to lay her egg. The tunnel was a bit tight and this male LM Weaver reacted immediately when he saw what her intentions were. He grabbed onto her and bit down repeatedly on any exposed part of her body protruding from the nest entrance. The Cuckoo finally managed to extricate herself and we were surprised that the female weaver emerged after her from inside the nest also seemingly having bitten her on the head repeatedly. Parasitism successfully foiled! [see also record on facebook] Nest count 0 Nest site tree
