History of repeat colony counts
Note: repeats from the same day are not shown.vm Species code Date Nests Notes 7530 792 25/11/2013 0 Aware of this location for some time but suddenly become a significantly large colony. Familiar situation of many black commuters, fast food rubbish, pavement hawkers, water from Olifants river nearby - and safety from natural predators provided by human proximity. No nest count - to be done later. 7576 792 28/11/2013 241 Revisited VM 7530. There are 2 locations for this colony.
1. Had not seen this specific location before (Vm 7530). Returned 3 days later to do detail count. 3 counts yielded an average of 241 LMW nests with a 22 nest variation between counts. Very dense hookthorn tree with most nests facing east - over the forecourt, facing towards the intersection! Reason not seen before is because its a very dangerous intersection.
2. Solitary Red-billed Buffalo weaver hidden in dense foilage.
3. diederick cuckoos calling from neighbouring tree.
4. Tried to count males. less than 60 in attendance at time of visit - 16h00
5. 14 double and 3 tripple nests observed.
6. Counted nests, did not attempt to discriminate between old or new, used or unused, occupied or unoccupied.
7. noted that LMW also closes entrance when female is brooding.ie some have a wider opening, some are definitely reduced to very narrow tunnels.
