First PHOWN record for Golden-backed Weaver

2012-06-11 (224)

The Golden-backed Weaver is found in eastern Africa, mostly in wetland habitats but also in woodland. It is polygynous and colonial, and often breeds in mixed colonies with other weaver species. Like many other weavers in East Africa, it may breed in the long and/or short rains.

Recently Colin and Victoria Beale submitted the first PHOWN record for this species, VM 2391. The colony of 25 nests was seen at Messerani Snake Park, near Arusha, Tanzania. Colin also submitted the first PHOWN record for Rufous-tailed Weaver (see news item).
