Weavers sometimes breed in association with waterbirds, especially colonial waterbirds. Weavers have nested in heronries including various combinations of the following waterbirds: Reed Cormorants, Darters, Black-headed Herons, Grey Herons, Cattle Egrets, Marabou Storks, Pink-backed Pelicans, and other species. There are also many records of weavers nesting with solitary waterbirds, especially Hadeda Ibis, and also Hamerkop.
Seven weaver species have been recorded nesting with waterbirds, based on records scattered through the scientific literature. The PHOWN database has many records for the Cape Weaver and some for the Village and Southern Masked Weavers (see PHOWN records). However, there are likely to be more weaver species that nest with waterbirds.
