Sir Andrew Smith was a Scottish surgeon, naturalist, explorer and zoologist, who was also the first director of the South African Museum. He described many species of birds, reptiles, mammals and other groups, including six weaver species, namely Spectacled Weaver, Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Scaly-feathered Finch, WHite-browed Sparrow weaver, Fan-tailed Widow, and Yellow Weaver.
